April 27, 2004 RO Chemistry Chatroom Session Notes

Wes (Tue 7:50pm 192.168.0.201):"Let's get started. Welcome to our last session."

Wes (Tue 7:50pm 192.168.0.201):"Agenda for tonight: Assignment Submission, Homework, Final Project, Final Exam, Upcoming Courses, Course Critique"

Wes (Tue 7:50pm 192.168.0.201):"First, any pressing issues out there?"

Steve (Tue 7:50pm 208.38.86.84):"I have a question about the homework"

Kreg (Tue 7:50pm 192.25.144.225):"Not yet"

Kevin (Tue 7:51pm 24.3.20.15):"n"

Wes (Tue 7:51pm 192.168.0.201):"Steve, you want to wait a minute or speak now?"

Steve (Tue 7:51pm 208.38.86.84):"about net driving pressure"

Steve (Tue 7:52pm 208.38.86.84):"I did the computer part, and I'm still a little confused"

Wes (Tue 7:53pm 192.168.0.201):"I am confused about what you are struggling with?"

Steve (Tue 7:54pm 208.38.86.84):"what is the formula again for applied pressure"

Kevin (Tue 7:55pm 24.3.20.15):"My computer is slow anyone else having issues"

Steve (Tue 7:55pm 208.38.86.84):"n"

Bill (Tue 7:55pm 65.29.55.15):"n"

Paul (Tue 7:55pm 216.99.65.8):"n"

Kreg (Tue 7:55pm 192.25.144.225):"n"

Wes (Tue 7:56pm 192.168.0.201):"My delay is I had to look up the question. Others feel free to speak up."

Steve (Tue 7:56pm 208.38.86.84):"yeah, tell me."

Bill (Tue 7:56pm 65.29.55.15):"applied pressure is the feed inlet pressure"

Paul (Tue 7:57pm 216.99.65.8):"applied pressure is the inlet pressure supplied by the pump"

Wes (Tue 7:57pm 192.168.0.201):"in a system, it might be the average membrane pressure"

Paul (Tue 7:58pm 216.99.65.8):"NDP is the applied pressure minus the osmotic pressure and any pressure present on the permeate side of the membrane"

Wes (Tue 7:58pm 192.168.0.201):"Steve, can you isolate your issue with NDP?"

Steve (Tue 7:58pm 208.38.86.84):"concerning the net driving pressure"

Wes (Tue 7:59pm 192.168.0.201):"yes"

Steve (Tue 7:59pm 208.38.86.84):"is there something more than the pressures on both sides of the membrane?\"

Steve (Tue 8:00pm 208.38.86.84):"what does the osmo pressure have to do with it again?"

Steve (Tue 8:00pm 208.38.86.84):"anyone?"

Wes (Tue 8:00pm 192.168.0.201):"The osmotic pressure difference works against the applied pressure in calculating the NDP"

Paul (Tue 8:01pm 216.99.65.8):"you must over come the osmo pressue before you will have flow through the membrane"

Wes (Tue 8:02pm 192.168.0.201):"The osmotic pressure of the permeate side is usually negligible, so just the feed side salt concentration makes a difference."

Bill (Tue 8:02pm 65.29.55.15):"osmotic pressure is the force exerted from a more concentrated solution on a less concentrated solution through a semipermeable membrane"

Steve (Tue 8:02pm 208.38.86.84):"Wes, can I give my anser to question 11?"

Wes (Tue 8:03pm 192.168.0.201):"Normally no, but since this is the last session. go ahead"

Steve (Tue 8:03pm 208.38.86.84):"OK, thanks, I came up with 70, based on the salt concentration. But I'm still not sure"

Steve (Tue 8:04pm 208.38.86.84):"Tell me if I'm on the right track"

Wes (Tue 8:04pm 192.168.0.201):"now you can be sure it is correct"

Wes (Tue 8:04pm 192.168.0.201):"be sure to show your work"

Steve (Tue 8:05pm 208.38.86.84):"I did"

Wes (Tue 8:05pm 192.168.0.201):" so any other pressing issues?"

Steve (Tue 8:05pm 208.38.86.84):"n"

Bill (Tue 8:05pm 65.29.55.15):"n"

Kreg (Tue 8:05pm 192.25.144.225):"n"

Wes (Tue 8:06pm 192.168.0.201):"Assignment Submission: The sooner you submit material, the more opportunities you will have to improve on it. As our submission deadline of Monday, May 10, gets closer (less than 2 weeks away), I expect to receive a greater amount of material. This means my turn-around time will slow and you may not get a chance to react to my critique. Please try to get assignments in early."

Kevin (Tue 8:06pm 24.3.20.15):"understood"

Steve (Tue 8:07pm 208.38.86.84):"yep"

Kreg (Tue 8:07pm 192.25.144.225):"ok"

Bill (Tue 8:07pm 65.29.55.15):"ok"

Paul (Tue 8:07pm 216.99.65.8):"ok"

Wes (Tue 8:07pm 192.168.0.201):"OK. More of Homework: Question #9 of Homework D was poorly thought-out (rate of hydrogen sulfide gas movement). Because we don't know the initial concentration and the sensitivity of our noses, it is impossible to determine a concentration gradient. This means we can't figure out the relative rate of gas diffusion (because it is proportional to the gradient). I gave any attempt to answer the question full credit and actually received some excellent discussion."

Wes (Tue 8:08pm 192.168.0.201):"One student was concerned as to why that question was ever assigned. It was my unintentional mistake. Does anyone have any feelings they want to share?"

Kevin (Tue 8:08pm 24.3.20.15):"thanks i need every point"

Steve (Tue 8:09pm 208.38.86.84):"so do I"

Kreg (Tue 8:09pm 192.25.144.225):"Boy, you had me going on this one"

Wes (Tue 8:09pm 192.168.0.201):"a gift you deserve. I do apologize for the mistake."

Wes (Tue 8:09pm 192.168.0.201):"For the other homework D questions, the students did quite well. It seems we are comfortable with math related problems. Any other homework questions or issues?"

Steve (Tue 8:10pm 208.38.86.84):"not yet"

Bill (Tue 8:10pm 65.29.55.15):"n"

Kreg (Tue 8:10pm 192.25.144.225):"n"

Paul (Tue 8:11pm 216.99.65.8):"n"

Kevin (Tue 8:11pm 24.3.20.15):"not yet"

Wes (Tue 8:11pm 192.168.0.201):"Final Project: I hope by now you have started on your final project. You basically need to research some issue/product of interest related to water chemistry. Again, the sooner submitted, the better opportunity to improve your score. Questions?"

Paul (Tue 8:11pm 216.99.65.8):"n"

Bill (Tue 8:11pm 65.29.55.15):"n"

Kreg (Tue 8:12pm 192.25.144.225):"so far so good"

Steve (Tue 8:12pm 208.38.86.84):"n"

Wes (Tue 8:12pm 192.168.0.201):"Final Exam: I also hope by now you have gone through the CD and made an attempt at taking the final exam. Those of you struggling with chemistry may also struggle with the final. It is a challenging test, but it will be almost impossible to pass the course if you do not pass the final. You need to find out ASAP the topics with which you are having trouble. Any specific questions/topics you are struggling with?"

Steve (Tue 8:13pm 208.38.86.84):"not specific"

Steve (Tue 8:14pm 208.38.86.84):"keeping the formulas handy, And not using them regularly."

Kevin (Tue 8:14pm 24.3.20.15):"When you pass do you need to be hooked to a printer. How do we send it to you?"

Paul (Tue 8:15pm 216.99.65.8):"have not started the final yet"

Wes (Tue 8:15pm 192.168.0.201):"The program will create a file that you should e-mail me."

Kreg (Tue 8:15pm 192.25.144.225):"Good question Kevin"

Bill (Tue 8:16pm 65.29.55.15):"no questions yet"

Steve (Tue 8:16pm 208.38.86.84):"Do I have to be on a computer with my e-mail when I do it?"

Kreg (Tue 8:17pm 192.25.144.225):"Does it also tell how many times you attemped to pass the test?"

Wes (Tue 8:17pm 192.168.0.201):"oops I got booted from the web"

Steve (Tue 8:18pm 208.38.86.84):"Holy Cow!"

Wes (Tue 8:18pm 192.168.0.201):"It may track that information but it does not matter as far as this course is concerned."

Wes (Tue 8:19pm 192.168.0.201):"You do not have to be on the internet when you pass the test. The completion file is saved on the computer."

Wes (Tue 8:19pm 192.168.0.201):"If there is a problem with the created file, then if you connected to a printer, please a copy just in case."

Wes (Tue 8:19pm 192.168.0.201):"that is, print copy."

Steve (Tue 8:20pm 208.38.86.84):"No, I'm working on another computer. Does that mean I need to print something to e-mail you?"

Wes (Tue 8:20pm 192.168.0.201):"I have had one student successfully sending me the completion file so I think it works."

Steve (Tue 8:20pm 208.38.86.84):"ok"

Wes (Tue 8:21pm 192.168.0.201):"Steve, you can save the completion file on a floppy and e-mail it later."

Steve (Tue 8:21pm 208.38.86.84):"ok"

Wes (Tue 8:21pm 192.168.0.201):"other questions on the exam?"

Kreg (Tue 8:21pm 192.25.144.225):"n"

Paul (Tue 8:22pm 216.99.65.8):"n"

Kevin (Tue 8:22pm 24.3.20.15):"n"

Bill (Tue 8:22pm 65.29.55.15):"n"

Steve (Tue 8:22pm 208.38.86.84):"n"

Wes (Tue 8:22pm 192.168.0.201):"If you are having a problem with a question, post the issue on the Discussion Board. Do not give away any answers."

Steve (Tue 8:23pm 208.38.86.84):"ok"

Wes (Tue 8:23pm 192.168.0.201):"Upcoming Courses. Allan informed me that I have misled you about the beginning of registration for RO Principles. The correct date for the beginning of registration is May 3. I currently plan to offer RO Monitoring in the Fall, which will deal with RO instrumentation and normalization issues."

Kevin (Tue 8:23pm 24.3.20.15):"ok"

Wes (Tue 8:23pm 192.168.0.201):"Do any of you have any interest in an Ion Exchange or a Boiler Water Basics course in the Fall?"

Steve (Tue 8:23pm 208.38.86.84):"sort of, don' know yet"

Kevin (Tue 8:24pm 24.3.20.15):"yes"

Kreg (Tue 8:24pm 192.25.144.225):"ditto"

Wes (Tue 8:24pm 192.168.0.201):"OK When we offer these non-RO courses, I plan to involve other instructors. It should add more depth."

Kevin (Tue 8:24pm 24.3.20.15):"both"

Wes (Tue 8:25pm 192.168.0.201):"I will let you know."

Wes (Tue 8:25pm 192.168.0.201):"Course Critique: We have had some problems with the course, which I hope to correct for upcoming courses. I want to make sure I understand clearly what those problems were and give everyone an opportunity to express their feelings. I will break the ice by sharing some comments made by one of our students (atually the first comment was made by a few students):"

Wes (Tue 8:25pm 192.168.0.201):"1) The information in the CD and book were insufficient to easily answer some of the questions from the book. The book questions were inconsistent in their demands, so that it was difficult to tell when additional effort was needed and when it was necessary to look beyond the book to answer the questions. Comments?"

Paul (Tue 8:26pm 216.99.65.8):"I agree with this statement"

Steve (Tue 8:26pm 208.38.86.84):"I think some of us needed a more basic chemisty book to work with."

Kevin (Tue 8:27pm 24.3.20.15):"I think most the time I had to look at two or three basic chemistry books."

Kreg (Tue 8:27pm 192.25.144.225):"I argee with that statement 100%. "

Steve (Tue 8:27pm 208.38.86.84):"me too"

Wes (Tue 8:27pm 192.168.0.201):"I agree as well, and again apologize."

Kevin (Tue 8:27pm 24.3.20.15):"But, I believe they were basic enough for me to answer most questions"

Wes (Tue 8:28pm 192.168.0.201):"I think it made the learning process more stressful and time demanding than was necessary."

Wes (Tue 8:29pm 192.168.0.201):"To meet this need, I plan to: a) Provide supplemental material or suggest another chemistry text to assist in bridging this gap. b) Provide additional practice questions (along the lines of the added homework assignment) c) Warn students in advance about the need to look beyond the book to answer some of the questions, and tell them which questions will require outside research to devise a complete answer. d) Tell students in advance that they will be allowed an opportunity to improve on their initial homework/project submissions."

Kreg (Tue 8:29pm 192.25.144.225):"I don't know about the other students, but my time is limited with work etc."

Wes (Tue 8:30pm 192.168.0.201):"I respect that."

Bill (Tue 8:30pm 65.29.55.15):"I think you should make chemistry a prerequisite. This material appears to assume this much."

Kevin (Tue 8:30pm 24.3.20.15):"great comments I think you are right on track with a solution"

Steve (Tue 8:30pm 208.38.86.84):"Good answer"

Wes (Tue 8:31pm 192.168.0.201):"For those of you who have not previously had chemistry, should it have been required as a prerequisite?"

Paul (Tue 8:31pm 216.99.65.8):"yes"

Kreg (Tue 8:32pm 192.25.144.225):"YES"

Steve (Tue 8:32pm 208.38.86.84):"Good question, but I have had some chemisty. Just didn't use it."

Kevin (Tue 8:32pm 24.3.20.15):"I think a high school chemistry book along with your book is ok"

Wes (Tue 8:32pm 192.168.0.201):"Does that mean you would have taken a chemistry course someplace, or would have skipped this one?"

Wes (Tue 8:33pm 192.168.0.201):"Kreg, Paul?"

Steve (Tue 8:33pm 208.38.86.84):"Huh? how could you skip this one? Kinda important I think."

Kreg (Tue 8:34pm 192.25.144.225):"I wished I had known the depth of this course before hand. I would have thought about it more before signing up."

Paul (Tue 8:34pm 216.99.65.8):"if the assumption of the course is that the student does not have a chem back ground and the material is put togther in order to support that I think you could make it work"

Wes (Tue 8:35pm 192.168.0.201):"I agree. I think it is important, and what I would prefer is to offer the tools it takes within the course."

Kreg (Tue 8:35pm 192.25.144.225):"This course is very different than when I have taken your courses in person"

Kevin (Tue 8:35pm 24.3.20.15):"I would not have taken the chemistry course"

Wes (Tue 8:36pm 192.168.0.201):"Kreg, in all the courses I hope to go into greater depth than in a 4 hour classroom course."

Wes (Tue 8:36pm 192.168.0.201):"OK. 2) When encountering a frustrating issue in the course (such as trying to understand what the instructor is looking for in a question, or if a book question deals with an issue outside of the text), students may be feeling isolated. They don't know if others are having the same problem or what their alternative approach might be. Comments?"

Steve (Tue 8:37pm 208.38.86.84):"YEP"

Paul (Tue 8:37pm 216.99.65.8):"I agree with this statement"

Kreg (Tue 8:38pm 192.25.144.225):"I agree, I guess I need to be able to talk to the person face to face."

Wes (Tue 8:38pm 192.168.0.201):"Note: Students coming back for future classes will not be partnered with the same person. Was having an assigned partner helpful?"

ed (Tue 8:38pm 4.152.6.201):"Just Logged On."

Wes (Tue 8:38pm 192.168.0.201):"Hi Ed"

ed (Tue 8:39pm 4.152.6.201):"sorry I am late "

Steve (Tue 8:39pm 208.38.86.84):"Not my partner"

Wes (Tue 8:39pm 192.168.0.201):"No problem"

Bill (Tue 8:39pm 65.29.55.15):"I think the text book is excellent but it was not designed to support a course of this type. It did not offer sufficeint explanations to a novice. "

Wes (Tue 8:39pm 192.168.0.201):"I agree that Steve's partner was not much help for reasons we won't touch."

Kreg (Tue 8:40pm 192.25.144.225):"I agree"

Wes (Tue 8:41pm 192.168.0.201):"Bill, I was hoping for more of a dynamic class, one where we would use the discussion board to discuss issues, but that did not work very well."

Kevin (Tue 8:41pm 24.3.20.15):"I think the book coupled with a general chemistry book with question that can be found in either book;s readings would be ok"

Steve (Tue 8:41pm 208.38.86.84):"But why did the board not work?"

Bill (Tue 8:42pm 65.29.55.15):"You may want to use a discussion board that strings all the postings together. It would be much easier to use."

Wes (Tue 8:42pm 192.168.0.201):"So the answer for this particular course might be to require another text?"

Steve (Tue 8:42pm 208.38.86.84):"Wes, what?"

Bill (Tue 8:42pm 65.29.55.15):"Other software may make the discussion board more user friendly"

Wes (Tue 8:43pm 192.168.0.201):"Bill, do you have an example in mind?"

Paul (Tue 8:43pm 216.99.65.8):"I agee with Bill. The board was hard to follow and took to much time"

Wes (Tue 8:43pm 192.168.0.201):"a particular site I can look at?"

Bill (Tue 8:43pm 65.29.55.15):"No, but I have been on other discussion boards where you can read all follow up postings at one time"

Kevin (Tue 8:43pm 24.3.20.15):"Wes, I am use to a more user friendly chatroom with the instructure actually talking. Is this the only style the college has?"

Steve (Tue 8:43pm 208.38.86.84):"Ok, I get it now."

Wes (Tue 8:44pm 192.168.0.201):"I had to pull these resources together. St Cloud Technical College has some new software being used by other colleges I will be integrating."

Wes (Tue 8:45pm 192.168.0.201):"I tend to believe it has to be better than what we are using."

Bill (Tue 8:45pm 65.29.55.15):"I think it would be worth checking into"

Kevin (Tue 8:46pm 24.3.20.15):"I can give you what we use at a later time if you want"

Wes (Tue 8:46pm 192.168.0.201):"Good. Any things to look at or compare with will be helpful."

Wes (Tue 8:47pm 192.168.0.201):" Currently, my plan for future classes is to start out with a couple of frequent chatroom sessions, then make a complete shift to using the Discussion Board for nearly all correspondence. Do you think this will work?"

Wes (Tue 8:47pm 192.168.0.201):"that is with the right discussion board"

Steve (Tue 8:47pm 208.38.86.84):"Don't know about that"

Bill (Tue 8:47pm 65.29.55.15):"With better softwar I think it could work"

Kreg (Tue 8:48pm 192.25.144.225):"I agree with Bill"

Wes (Tue 8:48pm 192.168.0.201):"OK. 3) The course title was misleading. It was not really about the chemistry of reverse osmosis. Comments?"

Steve (Tue 8:49pm 208.38.86.84):"It wasn't?"

Kevin (Tue 8:50pm 24.3.20.15):"I don't agree. I think it has a lot to do with water chemistry"

Kreg (Tue 8:50pm 192.25.144.225):"That is one of the things that made the course hard in my mind. I didn't understand where you were going with it."

Steve (Tue 8:50pm 208.38.86.84):"What the heck have I been doing?"

Bill (Tue 8:51pm 65.29.55.15):"RO Chemistry covers a lot of chemistry"

Wes (Tue 8:51pm 192.168.0.201):"I think I will call future offerings of this course, "RO Water Chemistry". Kreg, would that help with your issue at all?"

Kevin (Tue 8:51pm 24.3.20.15):"I think the questions were sometimes hard to research but i think they were related to the course topic"

Kreg (Tue 8:51pm 192.25.144.225):"Yes"

Wes (Tue 8:52pm 192.168.0.201):"Are there topics we should have included in this course?"

Wes (Tue 8:53pm 192.168.0.201):"ones we didn't cover"

Bill (Tue 8:53pm 65.29.55.15):"How to read a water report would be a good addition"

Wes (Tue 8:53pm 192.168.0.201):"Bill, is that the same as a water analysis?"

Bill (Tue 8:54pm 65.29.55.15):"Yes, it would be a report issued by a lab"

Kreg (Tue 8:54pm 192.25.144.225):"I would have liked to have seen more on city water and it's treatment and what effects it has on RO's etc."

Wes (Tue 8:55pm 192.168.0.201):"I agree. Making available some different analyses and allowing students to interpret them and learn from them would be excellent."

Kreg (Tue 8:55pm 192.25.144.225):"Amen"

Steve (Tue 8:55pm 208.38.86.84):"That does sound good."

ed (Tue 8:55pm 4.152.6.201):"Examples of incomplete analysis and have the students balance them out provide you with the alkalinity forms etc"

Wes (Tue 8:56pm 192.168.0.201):"Kreg, these topics would be good but enormous in scope. There are courses out there covering just those topics."

Wes (Tue 8:56pm 192.168.0.201):"I do hope to get into it more in RO Pretreatment and in a separate course I will be putting together."

ed (Tue 8:57pm 4.152.6.201):"But these are some very important topics that should not be skimmed over if this is to be a complete water treatment course"

Wes (Tue 8:57pm 192.168.0.201):"I agree, Ed."

Wes (Tue 8:58pm 192.168.0.201):"What did you like about the course?"

Kreg (Tue 8:59pm 192.25.144.225):"I think what i said would be a great place to start a course."

Steve (Tue 8:59pm 208.38.86.84):"Made me think.... Hard at times."

Wes (Tue 8:59pm 192.168.0.201):"anything worth keeping?"

ed (Tue 8:59pm 4.152.6.201):"I think that the amount of content for a 2 credit course was appropriate"

Kreg (Tue 8:59pm 192.25.144.225):"I think it made you dig for answers"

Wes (Tue 8:59pm 192.168.0.201):"Kreg, you are saying the course should start with municpal water treatment."

Bill (Tue 9:00pm 65.29.55.15):"I like the structure, it is easier to fit into a schedule than a brick and mortar course"

Kevin (Tue 9:00pm 24.3.20.15):"The cd and the reading in general. "

Kreg (Tue 9:00pm 192.25.144.225):"That is where most of us get our water , so Yes"

Wes (Tue 9:00pm 192.168.0.201):"Do others agree that 2 credits was appropriate for the course?"

Kreg (Tue 9:01pm 192.25.144.225):"I did like the flexability of the course time wise"

Steve (Tue 9:01pm 208.38.86.84):"I want 60 credits.... Just to have them"

Paul (Tue 9:01pm 216.99.65.8):"the book is very good, but needed additional material to help with the basic chem"

Steve (Tue 9:01pm 208.38.86.84):"I liked the time frame as well."

ed (Tue 9:01pm 4.152.6.201):"The flexability of the course was what I liked the most"

Kevin (Tue 9:02pm 24.3.20.15):"I agree with ed and steve"

Steve (Tue 9:02pm 208.38.86.84):"Kevin wants 60 credits with me!"

Wes (Tue 9:03pm 192.168.0.201):"So we keep the flexibility and expand on the content. Anyone have any ideas that might bring more depth or interest to future classes?"

Bill (Tue 9:04pm 65.29.55.15):"Perhaps some case studies or real world examples"

ed (Tue 9:04pm 4.152.6.201):"Wes, you should look at giving a question that requires some research based on the data presented i.e. This is the RO and here are the readings exactly what Bill is saying and also discuss the different approaches that where given "

Kreg (Tue 9:05pm 192.25.144.225):"Interactive CD's or tapes would be helpful"

Steve (Tue 9:05pm 208.38.86.84):"I thought the CD was interactive"

Wes (Tue 9:05pm 192.168.0.201):"Kreg, you are referring to additional material that already exists?"

Kreg (Tue 9:06pm 192.25.144.225):"NO more material included in the course. The CD was interactive I know"

ed (Tue 9:06pm 4.152.6.201):"maybe all this case studies would be better in a later course after the basics have been established"

ed (Tue 9:07pm 4.152.6.201):"goodnight"

ed (Tue 9:07pm 4.152.6.201):"Logged Off"

Wes (Tue 9:07pm 192.168.0.201):"I think application brings it home. I will try to integrate more as it is appropriate to the particular course."

Kevin (Tue 9:07pm 24.3.20.15):"I really believe with this course if we would all have had a common basic chemistry book with your book it would have gone smoother. "

Kreg (Tue 9:07pm 192.25.144.225):"Yes Wes to your question I misread it Sorry"

Wes (Tue 9:07pm 192.168.0.201):"Bye Ed"

Kreg (Tue 9:08pm 192.25.144.225):"I agree Kevin"

Wes (Tue 9:08pm 192.168.0.201):"Kreg, if you have suggestions of material please let me know at your convenience."

Wes (Tue 9:10pm 192.168.0.201):"any other questions of any type?"

Kevin (Tue 9:10pm 24.3.20.15):"This course was water chemistry. I am sure there are more courses to come relating to other applications of RO. I think the course was on course"

Kreg (Tue 9:10pm 192.25.144.225):"Thanks for working with me on this course."
