Feb. 24, 2004 RO Chemistry Chatroom Session Notes

Wes (Tue 7:33pm 64.61.211.216):"Agenda for tonight: Grades, Class Discussion Board, Homework, Midterm Projects
Anyone have a pressing issue they want to express?"

Allan (Tue 7:34pm 24.64.223.204):"I think you have covered the areas"

Bill (Tue 7:34pm 65.29.54.55):"n"

Paul (Tue 7:34pm 67.24.71.217):"n"

Wes (Tue 7:35pm 64.61.211.216):"I have one item. Although I play a straight role in these sessions, humor is quite
acceptable and desirable. I know that it is easy to get the wrong impression from these sessions, so I don’t want you to think I
am against humor. I avoid humor only because as facilitator I fear that my use of it will tend to create tangents that will make the
sessions go late. "

Allan (Tue 7:35pm 24.64.223.204):"someone has to keep a reign on things"

Wes (Tue 7:35pm 64.61.211.216):"call me Dad"

Wes (Tue 7:36pm 64.61.211.216):"Grades: There is now a way to check your progress in this course by connecting to the
Grades link in the Outline of the course support page,
www.DIwater.net/Reverse_Osmosis_Chemistry_Course_Support_Page.htm"

Wes (Tue 7:36pm 64.61.211.216):"I have devised a point system, which I hope is self-explanatory. If not, please post your
questions on the Communication/Discussion Board or bring them to the next chat session. Any immediate questions?"

Allan (Tue 7:37pm 24.64.223.204):"I went there earlier and I really like the format, and also gives us an indication of the
importance of particular subject areas"

Wes (Tue 7:37pm 64.61.211.216):"good. I think it will help communicate what I think is important."

Wes (Tue 7:38pm 64.61.211.216):"Class Discussion Board: Many are not using the board. It is meant to be a substitute for a
classroom technical discussion. Since this is an impressive group, you may feel intimidated. Are there other reasons for not
using it?"

Allan (Tue 7:39pm 24.64.223.204):"no good reasons"

Wes (Tue 7:39pm 64.61.211.216):"It seems Bill, Kevin, and Steve have been the only ones to use it."

Wes (Tue 7:40pm 64.61.211.216):"A colleague suggested that people are age are not comfortable with discussing things on
computer."

EdCzaja (Tue 7:41pm 65.56.71.17):"Just Logged On."

Allan (Tue 7:41pm 24.64.223.204):"I can see how that has some merit, I am more afraid of looking like a goof"

Wes (Tue 7:41pm 64.61.211.216):"Welcome Ed"

EdCzaja (Tue 7:41pm 65.56.71.17):"hello all"

Wes (Tue 7:41pm 64.61.211.216):"Unless you use the chatroom to handle your technical questions, I expect 1-2 postings a
week. Please feel free to use an alias name when posting, just be sure to e-mail me your alias identity if you want to receive
credit for your postings. You can choose when you want to use your alias, or when you want to post using your real name.
Questions?"

EdCzaja (Tue 7:42pm 65.56.71.17):"let me catch up on what we been talking about"

Allan (Tue 7:42pm 24.64.223.204):"n"

Wes (Tue 7:42pm 64.61.211.216):"Maybe an alias will make it less intimidating."

Allan (Tue 7:43pm 24.64.223.204):"internet chatrooms are filled with brave people hiding behind psuedonyms"

Wes (Tue 7:44pm 64.61.211.216):"so maybe we should try it out. It is up to you."

Allan (Tue 7:44pm 24.64.223.204):"Again, my issue was being away, and plan to catch up on the board"

Wes (Tue 7:44pm 64.61.211.216):"Ed, are you caught up?"

EdCzaja (Tue 7:45pm 65.56.71.17):"yes"

Wes (Tue 7:46pm 64.61.211.216):"Homework: I have heard that some are having trouble making the transition required to
apply the concepts explained in the book to the end-of-chapter questions. They are meant to be challenging. But I do not want
you to lose confidence in your ability to understand the course material."

Wes (Tue 7:46pm 64.61.211.216):"I have posted a file with additional questions on the chatroom introduction page. I have
tried to order them from least difficult (basic concept) to most difficulty (applied concept) to assist you in making the learning
connections. I will assign partner teams to answering these questions. I am going to push you somewhat on this one and will
make the due date for the initial postings March 5. Is that a reasonable due date?"

Allan (Tue 7:47pm 24.64.223.204):"consider it done"

EdCzaja (Tue 7:47pm 65.56.71.17):"Wes, maybe I am reading into the questions too much but there is not a lot of substance
in the book to do the home work for me that is , I find that I am having to go to my old Chem books to find the answers "

Allan (Tue 7:48pm 24.64.223.204):"I went out and bought a first year chem text myself"

Wes (Tue 7:49pm 64.61.211.216):"I understand that the book material is minimal. I will need to expand on it for the next
edition."

Wes (Tue 7:49pm 64.61.211.216):"I hope you are using the CD. I would expect that you would use it first to create visual
pictures before reading the book."

Allan (Tue 7:49pm 24.64.223.204):"I can see how the text would be exceptional as a review for someone already "in the
know""

Wes (Tue 7:50pm 64.61.211.216):"That is the book's intent on the theory, Allan."

EdCzaja (Tue 7:50pm 65.56.71.17):"The text is a good overview but it skims the basics that the questtions are based on and
I have forgotten"

EdCzaja (Tue 7:51pm 65.56.71.17):"So Wes bear with me why I scratch some grey matter"

Wes (Tue 7:51pm 64.61.211.216):"In this course, I expected that the Discussion Board would be used to fill the gap left by
the book."

EdCzaja (Tue 7:51pm 65.56.71.17):"I used to use the calcs all the time but when your not using it you lose it"

EdCzaja (Tue 7:52pm 65.56.71.17):" sorry I meant while "

Wes (Tue 7:53pm 64.61.211.216):"I think it is powerful when you go out of your way to learn material. But I certainly don't
want ot make it too hard."

Wes (Tue 7:53pm 64.61.211.216):"Concerning the new homework assignment, after the partner team answers the question
with input from both partners, others are free to comment, correct, or expand on their answers. Again, you can use an alias. In
your original postings and follow-up, you will receive points based on your participation, not on whether you get the right
answer. Questions?"

Allan (Tue 7:54pm 24.64.223.204):"n"

Bill (Tue 7:54pm 65.29.54.55):"n"

Paul (Tue 7:54pm 67.24.71.217):"n"

EdCzaja (Tue 7:54pm 65.56.71.17):"One thing that might help everyone is if the acceptable answers to the questions were
posted so that we can all learn from each other"

Allan (Tue 7:54pm 24.64.223.204):"oops, are we using our current partners?"

Wes (Tue 7:55pm 64.61.211.216):"You will be using your current partners but I will be e-mailing your codes for which
questions you will be doing."

Wes (Tue 7:56pm 64.61.211.216):"I am basically forcing dialogue so that we can learn from each other. The original postings
should be confidential so feel free to be wrong."

Wes (Tue 7:57pm 64.61.211.216):"Next Homework: Read pp 11 – 17 End-of-chapter questions #5 & 6. You should
consider pH when you answer #5."

Wes (Tue 7:57pm 64.61.211.216):"Projects: I have not heard from everyone concerning your project idea. Letting me know
will verify that you have a unique project and allow me to provide assistance if I think it is called for. Reports are due March
23. This is the last time we meet as a group before they are due. "

Wes (Tue 7:58pm 64.61.211.216):"any project questions?"

Allan (Tue 7:59pm 24.64.223.204):"would comparing the relationship (if there is one) between conductivity and pH while
titrating sodium bicarbonate and vinegar be a consideration?"

EdCzaja (Tue 7:59pm 65.56.71.17):"I am still grappling with the mid tterm project idea, I know that you have said that we
could do a simple experiment at home but would consider something other than an experiment"

Wes (Tue 8:00pm 64.61.211.216):"Allan, your project would work great in this course."

Wes (Tue 8:00pm 64.61.211.216):"I am open, Ed. Do you have something in mind?"

EdCzaja (Tue 8:01pm 65.56.71.17):"I was originally thinking of before I saw it in the book and thought otherwise, was the
relationship between ATP testing and conventional biocounting"

Wes (Tue 8:02pm 64.61.211.216):"That would be fine, but is probably better suited for the Bio-Control Course."

Wes (Tue 8:03pm 64.61.211.216):"It would be OK, but if you can think of something more related to the chemical aspects of
water, that would be preferred."

EdCzaja (Tue 8:03pm 65.56.71.17):"I will keep thinking about it"

Wes (Tue 8:03pm 64.61.211.216):"If it comes down to it, use one of my posted ideas."

Wes (Tue 8:04pm 64.61.211.216):"Also, I don't think I asked if there are any questions on the homework that is due today?"

EdCzaja (Tue 8:05pm 65.56.71.17):"If my memory serves me right you would like it in the form of the usual theory,
hypothesis..... chemistry lab report format"

Wes (Tue 8:06pm 64.61.211.216):"Yes, I have posted a general format I would suggest for the report."

Allan (Tue 8:07pm 24.64.223.204):"Is it too early to be discussing the final project??"

Wes (Tue 8:07pm 64.61.211.216):"No, I like working ahead."

EdCzaja (Tue 8:07pm 65.56.71.17):"what is the due date of the homework that you just posted (Q's 5,6)??"

Allan (Tue 8:07pm 24.64.223.204):"time management is always an issue for me"

Wes (Tue 8:08pm 64.61.211.216):"April 6 Ed"

Wes (Tue 8:08pm 64.61.211.216):"The intent is to make it more of a research paper."

EdCzaja (Tue 8:09pm 65.56.71.17):"sorry I didn't look at the syllabus;)"

Allan (Tue 8:09pm 24.64.223.204):"again in the water chemistry area?"

Wes (Tue 8:10pm 64.61.211.216):"definitely something related to the course material"

EdCzaja (Tue 8:10pm 65.56.71.17):"thanks for the help signing off"

EdCzaja (Tue 8:10pm 65.56.71.17):"Logged Off"

Wes (Tue 8:10pm 64.61.211.216):"You can use books, magazines, the internet. Just be sure to put it in your own words."

Wes (Tue 8:10pm 64.61.211.216):"bye Ed"

Allan (Tue 8:11pm 24.64.223.204):"the usual research paper format?"

Wes (Tue 8:11pm 64.61.211.216):"yes, I will post some guidelines later."

Allan (Tue 8:11pm 24.64.223.204):"ok"

Wes (Tue 8:12pm 64.61.211.216):"any other questions or concerns about the course?"

Allan (Tue 8:12pm 24.64.223.204):"n"

Paul (Tue 8:12pm 67.24.71.217):"n"

Bill (Tue 8:13pm 65.29.54.55):"n"

Wes (Tue 8:13pm 64.61.211.216):"Bill?"

Bill (Tue 8:13pm 65.29.54.55):"yes"

Wes (Tue 8:13pm 64.61.211.216):"got it. We do not meet again until Tuesday April 6, 7:00 pm central. Until then!"
